Do you need to move household items that are too small for commercial van lines but too big for conventional mail service? Then you need ‘small movers’ – moving companies that specialize in the local, long-distance and international moving or shipping of small loads. These companies typically do not impose minimum weight requirements, so you can be sure that your items get where to you need them – whether they are full households, partial loads or single items.
Picking out a small mover
There are several things to consider when you pick out a mover for your small loads. Here are some of them.
Pricing. If you think that small movers only charge based on weight, you’re wrong. A combination of other factors such as distance and manpower requirement for your move is also taken into consideration. This is normal. What you should avoid are small movers that charge a minimum fee if you don’t meet a certain weight requirement. Instead go for movers that charge only for the actual poundage or weighted average of the items you need to ship. Some movers just charge an hourly rate if the move is within the same state. You can save a lot of money by taking this option. Does the company ask for a higher rate during holiday or peak seasons? Dump them and find another – there are a lot of other movers who do not take advantage of seasonal demands.
Facilities and insurance. Choose only movers with special packing and crating facilities to handle small, fragile and valuable pieces. If you are sending antiques, priceless heirlooms, expensive automobiles or motorcycles, and other precious oddball items, make sure that the moving company offers comprehensive insurance as well.
Storage. In case your destination location is not yet ready the day that your items arrive, the small mover must be able to provide secured storage. You will have to pay extra for such a service, but it is more than worth a few dollars, especially if your items are valuable.
